The Super Star's entry to films

Rajinikanth began his film career through the Tamil film Aboorva Raagangal in 1975. It was director  K.Balachander who gave Rajinikanth a role as an abusive husband of Srividya. This film became controversial upon release as it portrayde relationships between people of wide age differences, however this did not prevent the film from winning three National Film Awards. His Next film was Katha Sangama followed by Anthuleni Katha, Aval Oru Thodar Kathai,Moondru Mudichu,Avargal,16 Vayadhinile. All these films portrayed the Super Star in Negative roles. In 1977, he accepted his first-ever lead role in the Telugu film Chilakamma Cheppindi.
Though Rajinikanth always refers to K. Balachander as his mentor,it was S. P. Muthuraman who changed his image. Muthuraman first experimented with him in a positive role in Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri in 1977. When this film became successful it brought the duo together for 24 more films till the 1990s.That year Super Star Rajinikanth played supporting roles in majority of the films with few of them being "villainous" he had 15 of his films released during the year, much higher than the previous years.
